  • This interdisciplinary study argues for the vital importance of visual culture as a force shaping the Victorian novels formal development and reading history.

It shows how authors like Charles Dickens, William Makepeace Thackeray, Wilkie Collins and Thomas Hardy borrowed language and conceptual formations from art world spaces – the art market, the museum, the large-scale exhibition, and art critical discourse – not only when they chose certain subjects or refined certain aspects of realism, but also when they tried to adapt various genres of the novel for a new and newly vociferous mass audience.

Quandaries specific to new forms of public display affected authors sense of their relationship with their own public. Download The Victorian Novel and the Space of Art: Fictional Form on Display (Cambridge Studies in Nineteenth-Century Literature and Culture) Debates about how best to appreciate a new mass of visual information impacted authors sense of how people read, and consequently the development of particular novel forms like the multi-plot novel, the historical novel, the sensation novel, and fin-de-siГЁcle fiction.

  • From the international bestselling author of The Lost Wife and The Garden of Letters, comes a story inspired by true events of two women pursuing freedom and independence in Paris during WWII.

As Paris teeters on the edge of the German occupation, a young French woman closes the door to her late grandmother s treasure-filled apartment, unsure if she ll ever return.

An elusive courtesan, Marthe de Florian cultivated a life of art and beauty, casting out all recollections of her impoverished childhood in the dark alleys of Montmartre.

With Europe on the brink of war, she shares her story with her granddaughter Solange Beaugiron, using her prized possessions to reveal her innermost secrets. Most striking of all are a beautiful string of pearls and a magnificent portrait of Marthe painted by the Italian artist Giovanni Boldini. As Marthe s tale unfolds, like velvet itself, stitched with its own shadow and light, it helps to guide Solange on her own path.

Inspired by the true account of an abandoned Parisian apartment, Alyson Richman brings to life Solange, the young woman forced to leave her fabled grandmother s legacy behind to save all that she loved.

  • This is one of the quite-a-few dinosaur books that I bought when my son was young. Book The Ultimate Dinosaur He, like me, was fascinated by these marvellous creatures, and we spent hours poring over our collection of books. Now his nephew is likewise fascinated, so much so that I felt it quite appropriate to have a dinosaur book as part of his H U G H Challenge (Hugh is his middle name). Of course, the fact that I didnt own any childrens book that began with the letter U was the primary reason for choosing this, but thats by the by.James had to know the names of every single dinosaur pictured in this book.

That wasnt necessarily easy. The book is written with the text being most important. Well, thats not entirely true. Perhaps I should say that its an illustrated book, as opposed to many dinosaur books which are primarily about the pictures even when they might have a great deal of text.

So, I had to go searching through the text for the names of the creatures in the pictures – good use of my scanning skills, but sometimes a little confusing for James (especially when I had to go back a page or two), who isnt yet a sophisticated reader. Hes only had 9 weeks of schooling (not counting kindergarten) and probably 99.99999% of the books that hes had read to him have had the words for the pictures all on the same page. How to judge this book then?

I have never read it, so I cant give a real assessment. But the pictures are excellent – not the stock standards of so many dinosaur books – and Rupert and now James love it for that. So four stars is appropriate.
