  • The novel of an unconventional childhood in the seventies by one of the most talked-about writers of new Mexican fiction. From a psychoanalysts couch, the narrator looks back on her bizarre childhood—in which she was born with a birth defect into a family intent on fixing it—having somehow survived the emotional havoc she went through.

And survive she did, but not unscathed. This intimate narrative echoes the voice of the narrators younger self, a sharp, sensitive girl keen to lifes hardships. With bare language and smart humor, both delicate and unafraid, the narrator strings a strand of touching moments together to create a portrait of an unconventional childhood that crushed her, scarred her, mended her, tore her apart and ultimately made her whole.

  • Suguru (Number Blocks) is a logic puzzle invented by Naoki Inaba (Japan).

The task consists of a rectangular or square grid divided into regions. Each region must be filled with each of the digits from 1 to the number of cells in the region. Cells with the same digits must not be orthogonally or diagonally adjacent. The heavy lines indicate areas, called cages, from one to five squares in size. About Suguru – 250 Hard Suguru Puzzles 12×10 (Volume 2) Fill each cage with unique digits, counting up from 1.

So for example a 2-square cage contains the numbers 1 and 2; and a 5-square cage contains the numbers from 1 to 5. Adjacent (touching) squares, even ones that touch diagonally, may never contain the same number.

Kirk wood, swinging on one heel, beheld hesitant upon the threshold a diminutive figure in the livery of the Pless pages.

  • Before The Computational Brain was published in 1992, conceptual frameworks for brain function were based on the behavior of single neurons, applied globally.

In The Computational Brain, Patricia Churchland and Terrence Sejnowski developed a different conceptual framework, based on large populations of neurons. They did this by showing that patterns of activities among the units in trained artificial neural network models had properties that resembled those recorded from populations of neurons recorded one at a time.

It is one of the first books to bring together computational concepts and behavioral data within a neurobiological framework. Aimed at a broad audience of neuroscientists, computer scientists, cognitive scientists, and philosophers, The Computational Brain is written for both expert and novice. This anniversary edition offers a new preface by the authors that puts the book in the context of current research. This approach influenced a generation of researchers.

Even today, when neuroscientists can routinely record from hundreds of neurons using optics rather than electricity, and the 2013 White House BRAIN initiative heralded a new era in innovative neurotechnologies, the main message of The Computational Brain is still relevant.
