  • Excerpt from The Reindeer and Its Domestication The first and most prominent fact about the domesticated reindeer is that it is entirely lacking in aboriginal America (the artificial introduction into Alaska is of very recent date), and represents an exclusive cultural property of the Old World. North America abounds in wild reindeer (known as caribou) and elk or moose; but the native population only hunted these animals, and nevermade any endeavor to domesticate them.

Consequently the old-world domestication cannot be a priori of very ancient date, but was accomplished only at a late time, when the population of America was settled.

This consideration will be amply con firmed by the history of the domestication. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Excerpt from The Ponca Tribe Clustered around the square ground, mounds, and hothouse were the dwellings of the ordinary folk. These houses were generally rectangular in shape, with walls of wattle and daub construction and roofs of poles and thatch.

The chiefs houses and temples were simi lar but often boasted elaborately carved interior timbers and roof combs. Around the town there was frequently a palisade of upright posts supported by earthen embankments for protection against enemies.

  • Excerpt from The Inheritance Tax The term inheritance tax is used in this monograph to mean any tax on the devolution of property, real or personal, either by will or by intestacy. Succession tax is essentially a synonymous term, and is so used with reference to most countries, but in Great Britain and the United States it has acquired a more restricted meaning. By a collateral-inheritance tax is meant one applying only to collateral heirs and strangers in blood, or one from which direct descendants at least are exempt.
