  • This book presents a model for describing translation performance as a basis for contrastive linguistics, in the realm of tense and aspect.

It is based on extensive corpus studies investigating the differences between English and Portuguese using authentic translations in the two directions. Download Translation-Based Corpus Studies: Contrasting English and Portuguese Tense and Aspect Systems In method and substance, the book features several original claims, trying to achieve a balance between theoretical issues and the presentation of concrete translation data.

In addition, it deals with computational applications of parallel corpora. Translation-based corpus studies should thus be appropriate for translator education, and for introducing contrastive semantics and the methodology of corpus linguistics to students of linguistics and computer science. Researchers in tense and aspect, translation, and corpus linguistics are, nevertheless, the book s primary audience.

  • The School of Oriental and African Studies, a college of the University of London, was established in 1916 principally to train the colonial administrators who ran the British Empire in the languages of Asia and Africa.

It was founded, that is, with an explicitly imperial purpose. Yet the School would come to transcend this function to become a world centre of scholarship and learning, in many important ways challenging that imperial origin. Drawing on the Schools own extensive administrative records, on interviews with current and past staff, and on the records of government departments, Ian Brown explores the work of the School over its first century.

He considers the expansion in the Schools configuration of studies from the initial focus on languages, its changing relationships with government, and the major contributions that have been made by the School to scholarly and public understandings of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

  • Redefining Music Studies in an Age of Change: Creativity, Diversity, Integration takes prevailing discourse about change in music studies to new vistas, as higher education institutions are at a critical moment of determining just what professional musicians and teachers need to survive and thrive in public life.

The authors examine how music studies might be redefined through the lenses of creativity, diversity, and integration. which are the three pillars of the recent report of The College Music Society taskforce calling for reform.Focus is on new conceptions for existent areas-such as studio lessons and ensembles, academic history and theory, theory and culture courses, and music education coursework-but also on an exploration of music and human learning, and an understanding of how organizational change happens.

Examination of progressive programs will celebrate strides in the direction of the task force vision, as well as extend a critical eye distinguishing between premature proclamations of mission accomplished and genuine transformation.

The overarching theme is that a foundational, systemic overhaul has the capacity to entirely revitalize the European classical tradition. Book Redefining Music Studies in an Age of Change: Creativity, Diversity, and Integration Practical steps applicable to wide-ranging institutions are considered-from small liberal arts colleges, to conservatory programs, large research universities, and regional state universities.

Parentheticals in Spoken English: The Syntax-Prosody Relation (Studies in English Language)

  • Taking both an empirical and a theoretical view of the prosodic phrasing of parentheticals in English, this book reviews the syntactic and prosodic literature on parentheticals along with relevant theoretical work at the syntax-prosody interface. It offers a detailed prosodic analysis of six types of parentheticals – full parenthetical clauses, non-restrictive relative clauses, nominal appositions, comment clauses, reporting verbs, and question tags, all taken from the spoken part of the British Component of the International Corpus of English.

To date, the common assumption is that by default, parentheticals are prosodically phrased separately, an assumption which, as this study shows, is not always in line with the predictions made by current prosodic theory.

The present study provides new empirical evidence for the prosodic phrasing of parentheticals in spontaneous and semi-spontaneous spoken English, and offers new implications for a theory of linguistic interfaces.
